When Alvaro was very young he would play his fathers mandolin. His father would hide it in the wardrobe so that his son would devote his time to his studies but Alvaro was clever and always found the strings. Leonor his sister, together with Jose Miguel and Jorge Enrique his two brothers would listen with love to the performances of Alvaro around the house.  Doña Transito Bermudez Otalora, his mother cultivated the talent of her son.
In 1936 Álvaro Dalmar formed a group in Columbia with Jorge Beltran , Pablo and Rafael Child called the "Four Devils", this was presented at the "Voice of Victor" at the station of Jorge Añez . Álvaro's first composition was called, Bambuco "The Little Devil"

When he was 15 years old he began to study classical guitar and in 1939 he continued his musical studies at Julliard in New York.  Along with music he studied acting as well as Cuban studies.
He graduated in 1946 and made his first appearance as a classical guitarist in the Town Hall.  According Dalmar " this was his best artistic era." He also joined as artistic director of the show.

Álvaro composed a lot for Carlos Julio Ramirez and Alfredo Sadel as as well as many others.
His first works were based in classical composition for the guitar. Dalmus Editions in New York published more than 100 pieces of his work. Alvaro’s first popular success was the bolero titled “Pensandolo bien” that he recorded with the “Trio Dalmar” in 1956. This song became a continental success.  And this was the Golden Age of the Bolero .
He also performed simultaneously with an act called the “Hour Glass” and the Capital Theater, where Michael Todd acted, the husband of Liz Taylor.
During this time he wrote a musical called “Mexican Hay ride” and was hired by Colombia Pictures to perform music for 3 differnt productions: “Smoke On Arrow Hill”, “Jack and Hill”, and “The Wonders of Manhattan”.

Slim Henry Plays Montego Bay.

I found this record in a thrift shop outside of Seattle, Wa and after a glance I knew it would be pretty durn good. Some of the Calypso standards are included here but much better versions then many recorded! The Caribbean is a musical dream land heaven for me! When African Traditions came trogether with South American and European traditions something very interesting happened rhythmically. Each style took on more dance oriented rhythms. In other posts I will delve further into the similarities and differences in Cuban, Haitian, Mento, and other Caribbean styles as well as how they relate to Blues, Jazz and Folk in America. For now I will say it was a melting pot and a crossroads for music.  Here we have a great example of a truer form of Rock & Roll and I hope you enjoy this piece of wax that has got the tracks.

"Above is "Slim Henry plays at Montego Beach", an LP on the label of the same name. Slim Henry had previously recorded rural mento with Ken Khouri in the 1950s, and two such tracks can be heard on the CD collection "Rookumbine: Authentic Calypsos and Mentos". The liner notes have  surprising amount of information about the musicians: singer and guitar player Slim Henry's real name is Henry Dudley Brown. A name familiar as Lord Flea's fine banjo player, Porkchops, is present, but on this LP, he plays mandolin, rather than banjo. Happily, his real name is supplied: Charles Lorenzo Harrison. The rest of the band is Ken Cole on banjo, Bash   (Thomas McLaughlan) on rumba box and Ken Longshaw on conga and bongo.   (Perhaps the latter is "Lord Largie ", who played percussion with Flea Porkchops. Or perhaps not.) A detailed version of the band photo from the front jacket can be seen here. The jacket also includes the lyrics for some of the songs, apparently only the ones it had handy from the earlier Lebby LP release.
The repertoire is also based on Lebby's stint at the MBH. One track, "Montego Mama" is probably the song the notes intended to single out when it incorrectly stated that "Shame and Scandal" was an original composition by Henry. Another tack, "Beyond The Hills" is unfamiliar. The sound is very nice. Uncharacteristic mandolin by Porkchops is often out front of the banjo/guitar/rumba box/percussion rhythmic back bone. And upon closer listening, the two tracks found on "Rookumbine: Authentic Calypsos and Mentos" also feature this mandolin enhanced line up."
