When Alvaro was very young he would play his fathers mandolin. His father would hide it in the wardrobe so that his son would devote his time to his studies but Alvaro was clever and always found the strings. Leonor his sister, together with Jose Miguel and Jorge Enrique his two brothers would listen with love to the performances of Alvaro around the house.  Doña Transito Bermudez Otalora, his mother cultivated the talent of her son.
In 1936 Álvaro Dalmar formed a group in Columbia with Jorge Beltran , Pablo and Rafael Child called the "Four Devils", this was presented at the "Voice of Victor" at the station of Jorge Añez . Álvaro's first composition was called, Bambuco "The Little Devil" 
 
When he was 15 years old he began to study classical guitar and in 1939 he continued his musical studies at Julliard in New York.  Along with music he studied acting as well as Cuban studies.
He graduated in 1946 and made ​​his first appearance as a classical guitarist in the Town Hall.  According Dalmar " this was his best artistic era." He also joined as artistic director of the show.
 
Álvaro composed a lot for Carlos Julio Ramirez and Alfredo Sadel as as well as many others. 
His first works were based in classical composition for the guitar. Dalmus Editions in New York published more than 100 pieces of his work. Alvaro’s first popular success was the bolero titled “Pensandolo bien” that he recorded with the “Trio Dalmar” in 1956. This song became a continental success.  And this was the Golden Age of the Bolero .
He also performed simultaneously with an act called the “Hour Glass” and the Capital Theater, where Michael Todd acted, the husband of Liz Taylor. 
During this time he wrote a musical called “Mexican Hay ride” and was hired by Colombia Pictures to perform music for 3 differnt productions: “Smoke On Arrow Hill”, “Jack and Hill”, and “The Wonders of Manhattan”.
